Hi all,

When designing a training schedule for myself, I seek to design a routine that I can accomplish 90% of the time. This sets the foundation for consistency: the schedule needs to be realistic enough that day in and day out, 9 days out 10, I can find a way to get the training done, regardless of how busy I am at work or the time of year. If there is any secret to building long lasting fitness, this is it.

The goal is to establish the baseline of what your weekly training routine will look like. You then build upon this schedule based on your immediate athletic goals and the time of season.

The amazing thing with an elite athlete is they prioritize their life and built up their fitness to a point that their "90% Routine" involves impressive amounts of training.

What if your key event for 2022 requires extended bouts of training that is well beyond what's 90% sustainable? This is a red flag, a warning you may need to reassess your priorities and what you can reasonably accomplish during this given time frame.

What the 90% Routine does is change your focus from short term to long. When done correctly, few people will be playing as long a game as you. Besides, what good is it to become wildly fit for a season, only to develop an overuse injury or burnout a year later?

Want to take this one step further? Design a 90% Routine that could be sustainable for 90% of your life. Think you may live to 80? Okay, fine: can you imagine the 72 year old version of yourself sustaining this workout routine? If the answer is yes, you're on the right track.

The 90% Routine is the inspiration for our new 2022 Team Tri Town Base Training Program. Today we are launching a new, year long training calendar to help maintain and build your base fitness. The workouts are simple, sound, and designed to build your fitness up throughout the season. You may have to build upon this schedule based on your current fitness and goals, but overall this program will keep you within 8-12 weeks of being race fit at any point during the season. The best part- it is free to join and to use. Use this as your 90% Routine, and establish the foundation for a great 2022 season and beyond.

Events I'm looking forward to:

The Burley Spudman Triathlon changed my life: it was my first triathlon, and hooked me on the sport the moment the gun went off. This race sells out every year, and early registration is recommended if you plan on competing in 2022.

Shop ops:

- Can't find time to get your bike to the shop for maintenance, or could use help getting it back home after it has been serviced? We offer mobile pickup and delivery services on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

- Our maintenance classes continue this week with Mountain Bike Maintenance 201 on Wednesday at 5pm. Our friendly mechanics will help you learn the basics and more of maintaining your mountain bike. Class size is limited.

- Speaking of mechanical work: we are looking to add a part or full time mechanic to our team. If you have mechanical experience and are interested in learning more about this opportunity, please email me at [email protected] for more details.

Quote that struck a chord:

“You never put things in front of you that let you think you’ve arrived. Always have that level of deprivation, so you know there’s more to be done.” - Olympian Marcus O’Sullivan

Have a great week!
