The Tri Town Times: 11/25/19

Thoughts on thanks; Ironman Arizona report; Shimano's new gear box.

Hi all,

Years ago a friend introduced me to a practice of thinking regularly on how fleeting life can be. The Stoics called it "memento mori"- remember death. It may sound morbid on the surface, but I assure you it's anything but. The point being that by acknowledging how temporary something may be- whether it be our health, good fortune, family, wealth, etc, we will appreciate it more and be thankful to have it while it lasts.

This mental exercise can also be used while in a period of pain or struggle- say during a race or low point in life. Remember that this pain is also temporary. You may not be able to end it at this moment, but you can always choose your response to it.

Thanksgiving is a time of remembering and giving thanks for the people and things we have, and experiences we have endured- both good and bad. I am thankful for many things- my family, my health, my good fortune to every day do something I love to do. Thank you for giving me this opportunity. I know not everyone is so lucky, and I know I will not be able to do it forever- which makes me cherish it that much more.

Now down to business, here is your weekly TT Times newsletter:

Weekend Race Report-
I counted well over a dozen local athletes who trained through the fall to compete in Ironman Arizona this weekend. Congratulations to everyone who raced. The charge was led by a good friend and local pro triathlete Erin Green. This was Erin's last professional race, and she went out on top with a top 10 finish and Ironman PB.

Shop Ops:
  • We are open from 10am-2pm this Wednesday, and closed Thanksgiving Day.
  • We've been updating our end-of-season closeout list. There are some great deals on there already, and be sure to check back on Black Friday for the full listing.

Gear That Caught Our Attention:
Shimano has filed a patent for a bicycle gear box, which, if put into production, could be a game changer for the entire cycling industry. A gear box shifts nearly instantly, requires almost zero maintenance or lubrication, and is unlikely to be damaged in a crash.

Have a great week!
