Ironman Tulsa added to calendar; benefits of plyometrics and high weight lifting; hamstring stretching benefits questionable at best; Ironman World Championships swim changed to wave start; Chris Froome crashes in training.

Hi all,

Happy belated Father's Day! Though I'm not a Dad, I have the upmost respect for any father who sets the example for his children by pursuing a healthy lifestyle while balancing life, family, and work.

Here is your weekly TT Times newsletter:

Events We're Looking Forward To-

- Ironman has announced a new full distance event for 2020 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Tulsa will be the only Ironman in the central United States and is the first new Ironman added to the US calendar since 2014. Registration opens this Wednesday.

- Ironman Boulder, held just a week ago in the iconic endurance city, has been cancelled for future events.

Training Thoughts and Updates-

- Lower leg stiffness is critical for efficient running performance (a stiff spring returns energy more efficiently than a soft spring), and plyometrics and high weight/multiple joint strength training (>75% of 1 rep max) are some of the best ways to improve leg spring stiffness.

- A new study shows questionable at best benefits of hamstring stretching on athletic performance.

- Local coach Michelle Wiens has a variety of clinics and classes coming down the pipeline ranging from transitions, open water swim, run technique, etc. Check out her schedule and sign up here.

Gear That Caught Our Attention-
We have two spots left for 70.3 Coeur d'Alene bike transportation. This service is a great convenience for many athletes and cheaper than flying with your bike. Details here.

Popular Social Post-
Justin Williams' story is impressive: he's not only one of the few African Americans racing in a white dominate sport, but he has molded himself into one of the strongest road and criterium racers in the United States, all without the support of a proper road racing team.

Quote that Struck a Chord-
"It’s not the will to win that matters—everyone has that. It’s the will to prepare to win that matters." - Paul "Bear" Bryant

And in recognition of Father's Day it seems appropriate to share one of my favorite quotes regarding parenting, from Epictetus:

"Be careful to leave your sons well instructed rather than rich, for the hopes of the instructed are better than the wealth of the ignorant.

If You Have a Moment to Spare-

- Ironman has changed the iconic mass start format for the Ironman Hawaii World Championship race. The race will no longer send the amateur male and female participants out in two massive waves. Instead, the age group field will be broken into 11 waves and sent out in 5min intervals with the intent to improve safety and spread out the field on the bike.

- Chris Froome, 4x winner of the Tour De France, crashed while blowing his nose in a training accident and is out of this year's Tour.

Have a great week!
